American bass-baritone Donald Gramm sings Ives'
THE CIRCUS BAND (pianist: Donald Hassard)
All summer long, we boys
dreamed 'bout big circus joys!
Down Main street, comes the band,
Oh! "Aint it a grand and glorious noise!"
Horses are prancing, knights advancing;
Helmets gleaming, pennants streaming,
Cleopatra's on her…

Community is a word often used but, seldom lived out as fully as in the circus community. Where else do people work, live and travel together to bring joy to others? I'll take any answers to that question.
However, community is not a static state that can be held together by contracts or obligations to those who depend on us. It must be fed with flexibility, kindness, tolerance and love if they are to hold together.
In the midst of a popular trend to focus on circus communities by those who fe…

The Circus
The circus! The magical city
That appears and disappears with the bat of an eye.
A cathedral for children and adults
Made of canvas and trimmed with red wagons.
A sunburst of wheel, pink lemonade and cotton candy.
A temple housing the unity of man and beast...
All performing for the good of their fellow man
With shouts of glory.
The perfomers’ only reward is the echo of the applause
And laughter of children.
It cradles them to sleep.
As the red wagons roll from city to cit…

The above is the link to a new blog established to meet the fast changing needs of the residents and animals being evacuated from Big Sur.
At the bottom of the page are offers for horse care, dog and cat care. Red Cross had a shelter for animals but, it doesn't seem to be up and running.
This blog is somewhat more up to the minute than the radio and tv venues however, it is not a replacement.
If you know of anyone being affected by any of the California fires you may con…

Why Hello Adaline, I'm doing just fine thank you and I will never getr use to being a townie. Health is normal for an old duff like me and I manager to stay out of trouble. Have put away the shoes, but you know thaty and a lot of my stuff was stolen out of my storage space a lot of years ago but have manager to hold on to a few things. A bit dim on names though but if I see the face I know who it is and can remember right off. Every season I still get that urge to pack and head to Florida but that is ancient history now. Circuses are, of course, not what they were. Young people don't want an adventure such as we use to have. I actually ran away and joined a circus. I have never regretted it either. The smells, sites, sounds, grass under your feet, the animal aromas, the cookhouse, sequins, color, yep and the smell of warm canvas. Never wanted to go to bed at night for fear it was just a dream and I might wake up and fine it wasn't real. Well, I could talk your ear off so I'll just sign off for now. Nice "cutting jack pots" with ya........Bernie.View All Comments
